Health testing and Puppy health
All our our breeding stock are tested for the required health tests according to the Akc website and our breed clubs requirements. these test include:
- hip dysplasia (OFA)
- elbow dysplasia (OFA)
- Eye examination (OFA or CERF)
- prcd- progressive retinal atrophy (pra) DNA test
- congenital deafness (BAER)
- Primary lense luxation (OFA)
- Cardiac evaluation
- Progressive retinal atrophy (DNA test)
- Degenerative myelopathy DM (DNA test)
The reason we do health testing on our breeding dogs is because we can weed out any bad genes that we don't want to be passed down to our puppies. Things that these dogs are potentially predisposed to. we make the best pairings we can to get the best result we can from these dogs. Our goal is to breed the healthiest most balanced dogs possible, without genetic defects and without structure problems so that your puppy will have the best life with you. By putting our dogs through these test we are making sure bad traits wont be passed down .
Puppies are sent home with a health certificate from our vet, to signify to you that you are getting a healthy puppy. Puppies will have vaccinations and dewormed according to age and schedule. they will not be fully vaccinated until about 16 weeks old. All of my puppies are sent home already microchipped with fi nano chips. This chip doesn't cost anything for you, there are no hidden fees and it will stay active the entire life of your dog.
The Human Behind The Dogs
Hello! I'm Rose. I am the human behind these amazing dogs. I am currently active duty United States Navy and in school working towards my BS in Animal Behavioral Sciences. Australian Cattle dogs have been my dream breed for as long as I can remember.
I grew up in California with my teenage years being spent in the Central Valley. During these years, I was doing all things rodeo from barrel racing to roping to bull-riding. Cattle dogs were everywhere and I LOVED it. Since then I've always been drawn to the breed. There was something about their unique speckled coats and travel sized bodies that I adored.
I've had all kinds of animals my whole life. They were a big part of my younger years and upbringing. I learned young how to train and care for living beings that, on their own, couldn't care for themselves. They were my life. But they were family pets. Rescues, strays, not well bred or healthy. Medical issues hit some of them pretty hard in the end. And that broke me. Why did something I love so much have to hurt some much in the end? Why wasn't there anything I could do about it?
At that time I didn't know that there WAS something I could do about it. I wouldn't know this until years later.
I joined the US Navy in my early 20's. I was moved to the other side of the country and needed something to root me down. I needed a dog. Id always had a dog and now I didn't. I knew it was going to be an ACD. But I had no clue how to find one. This was going to be my first purebred dog. I hit the books and learned all I could. Health testing. Contracts. Ethics. This was a world I needed to be in. Enter Kane. My first cattle dog.
Boy did I need to do some more research. Kane was an angel and easily one of the easiest dogs to train that I have ever had. But I was not prepared for the energy that would radiate from this dog the second he woke up.
Watching Kane grow up was such a thrilling time. He matured so nicely. I wanted more of him. But better. I decided I wanted to try my hand at breeding. So I dug into as much research as I could. I found a whole community of people who thought like me and had high high standards. I found the breed club required testing and started testing him immediately. When he had passed the basics, I dug into what kind of dogs I wanted to breed. I had to find a female that was perfect. She had to be clear of everything.
Eventually I found Medoh's breeder. I knew what I wanted and she had it. Two wasn't enough for me. I love these dogs, but I wanted better. I knew better was out there. I was learning more about the breed everyday. I'm still learning about the breed and I don't plan on stopping.
I now have four amazing cattle dogs who are all at different places in their health testing. Kane is now 5. He's still my heart dog. He always will be. This breeding program has been a long time coming. Im excited to share the world of Australian Cattle dogs with the world.
With my friends and family's support, Ive made this happen. Being in the Navy, in school and having these dogs keeps me pretty busy, but honestly I wouldn't trade what I have for the moon. I still have a lot to learn, and thats the beauty of it. New science, new information and new discoveries happen every day.
This endeavor has just begun.
